Seba and Sana
In my first year at WdKA we had an assignment called Educanimation — basically making a proof of concept animation about a subject our teacher picked for us. Mine was about hijabi immigrant women.
At the time, I wasn’t really confident in drawing, so I took a more simple approach. My characters were loosely inspired by Chicken Run, and I wanted to build the whole thing like a collage. The idea came from how immigrants often hold onto their memories through old papers, photos, and familiar objects. For the background, I even used pages from an IKEA magazine from 2007.
The story follows a mother and daughter who recently moved to the Netherlands. IKEA is something they always visited wherever they lived, so it became this familiar comfort in a new place. The conversation between them is about the daughter, Sana, starting university life. And the rise of the far-right PVV party.
